In a survey conducted by OneHope (2020), it was reported that 40% of young people who identify as Christians have never opened the Bible for themselves. This blog focuses on how we can encourage young people to engage with scripture and experience its transformative power in a world full of constant digital distractions.
The impact of technology
Technology is everywhere, shaping nearly every aspect of our lives. Teenagers, on average, spend about 7 hours and 23 minutes each day in front of a screen (OneHope, 2020), whether it’s scrolling through social media, streaming content, or gaming. Screens have become their constant companions. However, while technology offers an abundance of information and entertainment, it also brings its own set of challenges. Research by OneHope (2020) highlights a concerning trend that heavy internet use among teenagers is linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Moreover, despite being more connected than ever, young people are experiencing greater loneliness, with the United Kingdom ranking as the leading country for youth struggling with isolation (OneHope, 2020), (Betteridge et al., 2023). Furthermore, research suggests that the persistent use of social media has significant impacts on young people’s ability to concentrate. Given the profound impact that technology and social media have on young people, it is so important for young people to understand and experience the transformative peace and love of God.
Young people today face high levels of anxiety and are often told that truth is subjective, that it can be whatever they want it to be. This leads to confusion, a lack of purpose, and ultimately, a sense of being lost. But in the Bible, we find direction, comfort, and wisdom. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Bible provides a clear guide for life, offering us the wisdom to navigate challenges and the assurance of God’s presence amid hardship.
Moreover, scripture is alive and active. As 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” The Bible is essential for spiritual growth, and it plays a central role in the life of a Christian. John Mark Comer, in his book ‘Practising the Way’, emphasises that engaging with scripture is the primary way we can be transformed and develop the “mind of Christ.” Therefore, if we want to see young people growing in their love for Christ, we need to model and encourage them to engage in scripture despite the constant digital distractions. But how?
Ways to encourage young people to engage with scripture
For many young people, the Bible can seem like an ancient rulebook with little relevance to their lives. However, there are now numerous resources and apps specifically designed to help guide young people through Scripture. Apps such as YouVersion, First5, She Reads Truth, He Reads Truth, and Daily Bread-Bible Readings offer engaging Bible readings and notes that are always available on their devices, allowing young people to connect with the Bible in a way that resonates with them.

Often, reading the Bible can seem like an overwhelming task, where it feels necessary to spend long hours reading complex passages in a formal setting. This perception can make young people hesitant to engage with Scripture. However, it’s important to help them understand that Bible reading doesn’t always have to be lengthy or intimidating. In fact, it can be as simple as a short, meaningful interaction with God’s Word, no matter where they are. Whether it’s reading a single verse during a lunch break, reflecting on a devotional in the morning, or even listening to a Scripture-based podcast while commuting, every small moment with the Bible can deepen their connection to God.
Teenagers flourish when they feel supported and accountable in a community. Encourage young people to read, discuss, and reflect on Scripture together. Being part of such a community not only provides the motivation to stay consistent in their Bible reading but also creates a space where they can openly share their challenges and victories. This shared experience fosters deeper connections to both Scripture and one another, making their spiritual growth more meaningful and relational.
